Beloved Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh city center returns to market after failing to sell

Edinburgh’s oldest operating Mexican restaurant remains for sale nearly three years after its owners announced their intention to step down from running the popular canteen.

Viva Mexico has been a Cockburn Street staple since 1984, but husband-and-wife team Julio and Judith Gonzalez have opted out of the restaurant after 35 years of serving the “capital’s best fajitas.”

The 80-seater restaurant, located just a stone’s throw from the Royal Mile, was originally listed for offers in excess of £1.2million to potential buyers.

However, the asking price has since fallen to £950,000 after failing to attract a new owner since listing in October 2019.

According to the advert on property site Zoopla, Viva Mexico “offers a fantastic opportunity to purchase an already well-established and highly regarded licensed restaurant located in one of Edinburgh’s most popular tourist areas”.

He continues: “The atmosphere is warm thanks to the cleverly placed mobile furniture and the mood lighting.

“The ground floor dining room has room for 15 covers and to the rear of the room is a decorative bar with a well stocked portico.

“The basement offers two dining areas, the main dining room seating 40 and a well-placed prep area for desserts and coffees.

“The second dining room which provides access to two large storage cupboards provides room for an additional 30 place settings and continues the theme of modern and vibrant Mexican decor found throughout the restaurant.”

The restaurant reappeared on the market earlier this month, marketed by real estate agent McEwan Fraser.

Speaking in 2019, Julio and Judith said: “After 35 happy and rewarding years running our restaurant, we have decided it is time to retire.

“It has been a joy (and a challenge) and we will never forget all the people – family, staff, customers and friends who have been with us on the trip and we will always be grateful for all the love and support that we have received over the years.”
