Michigan’s Best Local Food: Mexican Restaurant Don Felipe Sets Up New Chesaning Location
FLUSHING, MI — Sharing his Mexican culture with new friends and families is something restaurant owner Juan Vizcarra is looking forward to bringing to the New Lothrop community.
Juan Vizcarra opened his first business as co-owner of Mexican restaurant Don Felipe in Clio in 2018 and a few years later opened a second location in Chesaning in September 2021.
His vision and plan is to open a third Don Felipe restaurant in downtown New Lothrop within the next three to four months in place of the former bar The Hornet’s Nest, located at 9483 Genesee St.
Vizcarra co-owns the restaurants with Javier Bernal Sr. and Javier Bernal Jr. all of whom are from the state of Jalisco in Mexico.
“Don Felipe was the father of Javier Bernal Sr. Javier Bernal Sr. and Javier Bernal Jr. are my partners and the ones who gave me the chance to become a business owner in 2018,” Vizcarra said. “We used the name Felipe to keep his name, his memory and his legacy alive.”
Vizcarra immigrated to the United States in 2005 from his hometown of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
“I come from a very poor family in Mexico, so for me to get somewhere in life is a goal that I have for myself and my two children. What I’m doing now is for my family and my children so they can have a better life and a better future. My family means everything to me,” Vizcarra said.
Don Felipe’s Mexican Restaurant offers traditional handmade meals freshly prepared from scratch.
Menu favorites include; authentic street tacos, burritos, enchiladas and fajitas. Menu items remain affordable and range from $7 to $18.
“We are thrilled to open in New Lothrop and be part of the amazing community,” said Vizcarra. “We can’t wait to share our delicious, fresh, authentic Mexican cuisine and the best margaritas you’ll ever taste!”
He credits the Bernal family for their success and their chance to be part of the business.
“I am not related by blood to the Bernal family, but we have worked together for so long that to me they are my family,” Vizcarra said. “I hope that one day I can become as good as Javier Bernal Sr. He is really my role model. I really admire him.
Hours of operation for Don Felipe’s at Clio, 138 W. Vienna St., are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday, and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Don Felipe’s hours of operation in Chesaning, 120 W. Broad St., are 11 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
