The bodies of two Canadians found with their throats slit in an apartment in Playa del Carmen
According to the prosecution, a security guard was also injured in the tourist apartment complex in the city center.
Investigators found three different names for the male victim in the apartment where the remains were discovered. The individual was also wanted for global fraud, authorities said.
Although it is suspected that the victims had been in the neighborhood for a few months, investigators have not yet confirmed whether they were longtime residents or visitors, according to the news agency. AFP reported.
Playa del Carmen is in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, which borders the Caribbean Sea and includes the tourist destinations of Cancun and Tulum.
The violence is not unusual in the region, but it has mostly occurred outside tourist areas.
Last October, two visitors, a German and an Indian, were killed in a shootout in Tulum between suspected drug traffickers.
Two other Canadians were killed and one was injured in a shootout near Cancún on January 21.
In March, a British resident of Playa del Carmen was shot and killed while driving with his daughter in broad daylight, AFP reproduced.
The majority of recent attacks in Quintana Roo have been linked to drug trafficking or extortion, officials say.
The state’s resorts are vital to Mexico’s tourism sector, which accounts for 8.5% of the country’s GDP.
