This Mexico Resort collection tests odors for COVID-19

Velas Resorts in Mexico, which has properties in Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Maya, and Riviera Nayarit, just implemented a new COVID-19 screening measure that is fascinating to customers and staff: the odor test.

The new protocol stems from the latest science from King’s College London, which found that there are six distinct ‘types’ of the COVID-19 virus, each of which causes its own particular set of symptoms. While this can potentially complicate tracing and testing efforts, there is one common thread that is consistent across the six types: loss of smell.

Velas Resorts has therefore proposed a new, simple but innovative safety precaution that targets this unifying symptom by testing the sense of smell of travelers. Before entering the resort grounds, guests and staff will need to participate in this test, in which they will be asked to smell a sachet (a small fragrant sachet) and accurately identify its peculiar scent. The sachets are infused with three distinct flavors: citrus, coffee or garlic.

Requiring this simple, non-invasive sniffle test will reveal whether individuals exhibit odor and sensory loss and may be infected with the virus. This practice is implemented in addition to the frequent health and temperature checks already in place for guests and resort staff.

Velas Resorts is also continuing its global program ‘Stay safe with the Velas program” improved health and safety protocols to protect its guests and employees in the ongoing COVID-19 conditions.

The Resort Collection has installed disinfection mats and booths, as well as contactless hand disinfection dispensers in all of its properties. It also tightened its cleaning and sanitation procedures, using EPA-approved chemicals and UV light, and provided staff with special training in implementing new protocols.

To reduce interpersonal interactions, Velas has also launched new features on the Velas Resort. mobile app, offering concierge chat, restaurant and spa menus, pre-registration for fitness classes and other resort activities, and more.
